What is a dental cleaning?

A dental cleaning is a preventative service aimed at preserving the health of the gums, the gum line and bones that support the teeth. This routine cleaning helps treat gum disease while maintaining optimal oral health. A skilled dental hygienist will perform professional teeth cleanings using advanced techniques and tools such as hand scaling instruments (for scaling and root planing), the Cavitron (water-scaler), and polish. This deep dental cleaning is complemented by a thorough dental examination conducted by our highly qualified Idaho Falls dentists.

Why are cleanings necessary?

Over time, tartar build-up collects on the teeth, housing plaque and bacteria around the gums. When not removed properly, the tartar will continue to collect on the teeth and in the gums. If left untouched, the tartar will collect further under the gums and can cause gum disease and tooth decay. By removing the tartar on a regular basis, gum disease is more easily prevented or treated when found. When the disease is caught early, less damage is done and it is easier to return the gums back to health. The gums and bones are assessed by the hygienist and evaluated by the dentist at every visit to check for the presence of gum disease, recession, bone loss, and other conditions. Prevention is the key to healthy gums and healthy teeth.

I am nervous about getting a cleaning. What should I do?

If you are a little nervous about your teeth cleaning, just know you have nothing to worry about. Our hygienists are gentle and care about your comfort. We also offer television, blankets (weighted and unweighted), pillows, and laughing gas to help put you at ease. Don't be afraid to let the hygienist know what makes you more comfortable. This will help us improve your experience and make things as comfortable as possible.
