What to Expect with Tooth Extractions

As an adult, having a tooth extracted is hardly a cause for celebration, but there is no need to worry. At

Machen Family Dentistry, we will work to keep you comfortable. Most extractions are easily completed

in the dental office. Using the same type of numbing for fillings, the dentist will first numb the area to

remove discomfort. If you prefer, other sedation options are available upon request.

Recovery Tips

  • No smoking for 24 hours

  • Avoid rinsing your mouth vigorously

  • Avoid drinking through a straw for 24 hours

  • Follow the recommended diet

In most cases a small amount of bleeding after an extraction is normal. Then over time, the bone will slowly fill in the area of extraction. For the first few days if you must rinse, rinse your mouth gently. If you experience swelling, apply a cold cloth or an ice bag and call us right away. Ask about pain medication.

You can brush and floss the other teeth as usual, but don’t clean the teeth next to where the tooth was removed. Give Machen Family Dentistry a call at (208) 552-0775 if you have any other questions. We would be happy to help! If you are in need of a tooth replacement, learn more about our dental implants or bridges.
